Anyone have any good recipe/techniques for making lentils???
Looking for more like a lentil stew with chunks of veggies in it - not overly soupy.
Crock pot is ok, stove top is ok - either or I'm comfortable with. Just never made them at home before.

Looking for something that'd look like this: [IMG]

I'd use the recipe I got this image from.. but it seems like half the people find the written recipe successful and half find it to be a complete failure, lol.

Figured I'd ask the chefs here for advice! :p

Don't have a recipe myself, but have you tried making lentil curry? Made a it a few times, not too difficult.

Naw I've never tried making lentils at all period.
I just don't wanna wind up with a pot of bland mush, haha.

    Lentils are assume!!!!
    You need lentils,
Whatever vegies you want to put in. (Carrots, Unions, peas, even potato , or all of them. Just not a ton.)
Some water, just go over the lentils with the water. Then just add some more as it cooks to be as soupy or think as you like.
A little red gravy (Italian gravy, preferably homemade) Not a ton, Maybe 1/4 to half a cup tops.
Depending on your taste, you can add a little meat. Some pieces of pork, or sausage, or ham. Or like the vegies any combo. Meat can already be cooked, lots of time I put in left over pork/sausage/meatball that was left in the gravy.
Season to taste. I usually add a some season salt, pepper, a some red pepper flakes and maybe union powder depending on if I put real unions in or not.

get it to boil then let it simmer for a few hours, till the lentils are soft. (make sure to watch it, add water as needed and mix).

Make a pasta. Some type of small noddle, like elbows. Some people like a small amount of noodles others like a lot. Add to lentils, let sit , and EAT!!!

Sorry can't really give exact amounts... I cook by look, taste and such. And yes, never comes out the same twice, but always good!

Mmmm see that sounds soooo good to me....
Like putting some leftover meatballs or roast in there.

Damn my mouth is watering now.

Keep the heat on medium? Covered or uncovered?
And how often do you check the water level?

It is good!!! Once it boils, I usually put it on low to medium. Want it to keep boiling, but don't want to burn the bottom. The hotter the more you have to mix and watch.
I usually cover it between mixing, but I have done it without as well.
First time, I would recommend checking every 10 minutes min... Maybe even around 5.. Once you cook it a few times you will know how much water you will need and may only have to add some once or twice.

I forgot to mention, you need some bullion, 2 beef should be enough. Though the way I like it. I usually put some of the good bullion (Picky, I found one that really taste good and it is soft, so about a tea to tablespoon) and 1 beef.

Did you ever get that pressure cooker? Pressure cookers do a fantastic job with beans/lentils. Even if you only take them 3/4 of the way to finish and slow down for the last part.
