I bought an Echo (the full size one of these) two years ago when "invited" (just means I got it during beta for a cheaper price) by Amazon. There is nothing that I need it for, but I do enjoy it. I have run some home automation through it (I use a Wink hub) and it can control various lights. I often use the clock features. I set alarms, timers, and ask it the time and the weather. It is hooked up to my Spotify account and I occasionally play music. I bought my mom one for mother's day and she enjoys hers.
I would buy the Dot, if I bought one today. The built in speaker on the full size one isn't too powerful and you are able to hook the Dot into external powered speakers or through bluetooth. Sadly it won't answer phone calls and act like a speakerphone.

@Within We have an Amazon Echo also. When we got it, I thought it would be a waste of money. But we ended up using it often. We have it in the kitchen, we use it for the following:

    • Shopping list - it is super convenient to say "Alexa - add milk to shopping list"
    • Todo list
    • Reminders/Calendar
    • Timer for the boys and also for food
    • Answering random questions - basically it can do a voice google search
    • Playing music - sound on it is decent. But with the dot above you can hook up a better speaker.
    • My boys use it to help them on homework when they can get away with it. I thought it was creative hearing my 7 year old ask it math questions? Of course I had to stop it.
    • My wife and kids like to hear Alexa tell them jokes

I may buy the dot for the bedroom and use it as an alarm, music, etc...

Still liking the DOT, I think it is a better deal than the Echo. It works great for most basic task. If you really want to listen to music with it then use bluetooth.
